Brief History:

The starting point for Conectus was the idea developed by Helmut Piel, Professor of physics at Wuppertal University and founder of Cryoelectra, to organize an industrial representation of superconductivity in Europe. In particular, at International Superconductivity Industry Summits a European counterpart to Japanese and US delegations was felt necessary. Sir Martin Wood, founder of Oxford Instruments, agreed to take the responsibilty for putting the new organisation on a legal footing and to become the first Chairman of Conectus. On 2nd August 1994 the CONSORTIUM OF EUROPEAN COMPANIES DETERMINED TO USE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY was founded as a private "company limited by guarantee and not having a share capital", registered in the UK. Having made Conectus what it is today, Sir Martin Wood handed over the role as Chairman to Juan Farré, CEO of Nordic Superconductor Technologies, in 1998, and in year 2000 the baton was passed on to Udo Klein, Managing Director of ACCEL Instruments. In 2002 Roberto Penco of Ansaldo Superconduttori took over this task before in 2004 Heinz-Werner Neumüller, Department Head "Power Components and Superconductivity", Siemens, was appointed Chairman. Since the beginning Michael Sander acted as Company Secretary of Conectus providing continuity and stability. Based on a steady increase of membership the core competences of Conectus, market intelligence and technology watch, have been continuously strengthened.

Continuous communication between Conectus members is primarily based on the internet. An opportunity for face-to-face contacts and discussions is provided at the Conectus Annual General Meetings. A formal exchange of ideas with corresponding organisations from other parts of the world takes place at the annual International Superconductivity Industry Summit (ISIS) meetings.

1. Membership is open in principle to companies registered in the European Union (EU) or the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) which is their primary base of operation. A sales, service or RTD operation alone is not a sufficient activity.

2. Members must have a declared interest in superconductivity with a direct relationship to their business activities.
